The story

Mary Hayes Chynoweth, whose family made its fortune in Midwestern iron mining, bought farmland outside San Jose and built a family compound; after fire destroyed the first house she commissioned George Page to design a larger one, built from 1903 to 1905 as a triple residence. The family sold it in the 1950s and it stood vacant for years. The City of San Jose bought it in the 1990s and renovated and expanded it into a hotel and conference center.
