The story
John W. Havens, nephew of Berkeley pioneer and former Oakland mayor Francis Kittredge Shattuck, raised money for a hotel named for his uncle and chose Benjamin G. McDougall’s design in a competition. The Mission-style Shattuck Hotel opened in 1910 and quickly became downtown Berkeley’s social center. An annex followed in 1914 and a covered arcade in 1926.
