The story

Albert Robinson, a formerly enslaved man, and his wife Margaret ran a restaurant and bakery in the gold-mining town of Julian before starting the hotel in 1897, with C.R. Wellington and F.L. Blanc overseeing construction. The hotel calls itself the oldest continuously operating hotel in Southern California, a claim not independently verified. It is individually listed on the National Register as the Robinson Hotel.
