The story
Ulysses S. Grant Jr. began planning the hotel in 1905 as a monument to his father, the general and president, on the site of Alonzo Horton’s Horton House, the focal point of Horton’s ‘New Town’. Harrison Albright designed it, and it opened on October 15, 1910; two upper stories were added in 1922. The nomination lists Presidents Wilson, Harding, Truman and Kennedy among its visitors. It now operates in Marriott’s Luxury Collection.
