The story
New York railroad investor William P. Denckla began the cast-iron-fronted Denckla Block in spring 1872; the prefabricated iron facade is structural as well as decorative. After the Metropolitan Hotel burned on December 14, 1876, Col. A. G. DeShon and Maj. John Adams leased the building and opened the Capital Hotel in January 1877. Ulysses S. Grant was a guest. The hotel declined with downtown in the 1960s-70s, reopened after restoration in 1983, and reopened again in November 2007 after a two-year renovation.
