The story

After drought and pests struck Connecticut River Valley farms in 1884, brothers Edward and Frederick Everett built the inn to serve visitors drawn to Deerfield’s surviving colonial houses, and it opened as the Deerfield Inn the following year. Local builder George Arms enlarged it within a year. In the 1940s innkeeper Cora Carlisle sold it to Henry and Helen Flynt, founders of Historic Deerfield. Today it has 24 rooms between the main house and a carriage house.

The ghost story

Staff and guests describe three playful resident spirits. Some occurrences are credited to Cora Carlisle, a former innkeeper who held seances, and her presence is said to be felt near two second-floor rooms, checking doors at night.
