The story
The Beacon Hill Trust hired Ecole des Beaux-Arts graduate William Gibbons Preston to design the ten-story office building, finished in 1903. Its first tenant, the Boston Transit Commission, oversaw the building of the nation’s first subway system from here. After the commission disbanded following World War I, the city took the building by eminent domain and the Boston School Committee occupied it for nearly seven decades. Hoteliers bought it in 1998 and turned it into the 61-room XV Beacon, which joined Historic Hotels of America in 2016.
