The story

Boulder’s civic leaders brought the Chautauqua adult-education movement, founded in upstate New York in 1874, to the foot of the Flatirons in 1898. Visitors arrived by train and carriage to a planned campus of auditorium, dining hall and guest cottages, and the Dining Hall has served meals since 1898. The City of Boulder stepped up preservation in the 1960s and 1970s, leading to NRHP listing in 1978 and National Historic Landmark designation in 2006. Suffragist Theodosia Grace Ammons spent her final years in Gwenthean Cottage on the campus.
