The story
Philadelphia mining millionaire Spencer Penrose bought the Broadmoor casino, hotel and 450 adjoining acres on May 9, 1916. He hired New York’s Warren & Wetmore to design the new resort and Donald Ross for its first 18-hole golf course, and spent more than $2 million before it opened on June 29, 1918. After Penrose died in 1939 his El Pomar Foundation ran the resort until selling it to The Oklahoma Publishing Company in 1988. Arnold Palmer helped design its third golf course in 1976.
