The story

The hotel says its corner of East 10th Street held Fort James, a stone fort, during the Civil War, which gave the later Stone Fort Land Company and the Stone Fort Inn their names. German immigrant L. A. Hirtzfield designed the 16-bed hotel that opened in 1909, a three-story brick building with limestone pilasters and a corbelled brick cornice. The current owner reworked it in a mid-century-modern style with the Matilda Midnight cocktail bar and a Solarium event room.
