The story

The Louisville & Nashville Railroad built the station to plans by its engineer Richard Montfort, who had no formal architectural training, and it opened October 9, 1900. The lobby keeps its 65-foot barrel-vaulted ceiling, original prism stained glass, marble floors and three limestone fireplaces. HHA notes that federal agents escorted Al Capone through the station and that it was a waypoint for service members in World War II. Passenger service ended in 1979, and investors converted the empty station into the Union Station Hotel, which opened in 1986.

The ghost story

Historic Hotels of America relays the legend of Abigail, a young woman said to have lost the will to live after learning on the platform that her soldier had been killed in World War II. Guests and staff report her presence in the main terminal and in Room 711, now decorated as the 'Abigail Room'.
