The story
E. Lysle Aschaffenburg revived his late father’s plan and built the Pontchartrain on St. Charles Avenue at Josephine Street, completing it in 1927 for about $1 million as a residential hotel. From 1941 most units were converted to hotel rooms, and the Caribbean Room restaurant opened in 1948. The hotel closed for renovation in 2007; AJ Capital Partners, with Cooper Manning as a part-owner, bought it in 2014 and reopened it after a larger renovation.
