The story
The building opened in 1835 as the Planters Rice Mill and soon housed a syrup plant before becoming the North American Hotel about 1837. Over the next century it was a fire station, apartments and a boarding house called the Royal Bienville, and in the 1960s a motor hotel. The Monteleone family bought it in 1972 and restored it as Bienville House; it joined Historic Hotels of America in 2006.
