The story
German immigrant Louis Grunewald opened the six-story Hotel Grunewald in December 1893, in time for the 1894 Mardi Gras season. A 14-story, 400-room annex designed by Toledano & Wogan opened on January 1, 1908. Renamed The Roosevelt in 1923 and the Fairmont in 1965, it was home to the Blue Room supper club and the Sazerac Bar, and Huey P. Long ran his campaign headquarters there in the 1930s. Hurricane Katrina flooded its basement in 2005; after a full restoration it reopened under its old name on July 1, 2009.
