The story
Sicilian-born cobbler Antonio Monteleone bought a hotel at Royal and Iberville streets in 1886 and renamed it Hotel Monteleone after a major expansion in 1908-09. His son Frank added about 200 rooms in the 1920s, and the hotel was one of few independent hotels to survive the Depression. The Carousel Bar opened in 1949, the hotel was rebuilt in 1954 and expanded again in 1964 with the Sky Terrace. William Faulkner honeymooned here in 1929, and the hotel is still run by the Monteleone family.
The ghost story
Historic Hotels of America says the Monteleone has a reputation as one of the most haunted places in New Orleans. The best-known tale concerns Maurice Begere, a toddler who stayed at the hotel with his family in the 1890s; guests report encounters they attribute to his ghost.
