The story
Cattleman John R. Holland built the hotel during Alpine’s mercury-mining boom, and it became the town’s civic, social and business center; his son Clay later added to it. The National Register nomination traces an original 1907 hotel, a 1923 addition and a 1928 Trost & Trost addition with cast-stone lion medallions. Per THC, it operated as a hotel until 1969; it is a hotel again today on the Sunset Limited rail line.
