The story
El Paso architects Trost and Trost designed the brick hotel in 1926-27 for Vermont-born cattleman Alfred S. Gage, who built the largest ranching operation in the Trans-Pecos, more than 600 sections. After Gage moved to San Antonio and became a banker, the hotel served as his Marathon residence and the headquarters of his cattle and banking interests. Later owners added free-standing guest rooms on neighboring property in the 1980s.
