The story
The owner of the 100-room Anchorage Hotel built the three-story Annex in 1936 across the alley from the original 1916 hotel, joining them with a second-floor passage and a basement corridor. It opened in November 1936 with retail space, a banquet room, 24 hotel rooms and 12 apartments. After both buildings declined in the 1950s the original hotel was demolished in the late 1960s, and the Annex carried on as the Hotel Ronald Lee through at least six owners. Bob and Carolyn Neumann bought it in 1988, and renovations in 1988, 1994 and 1998 restored much of its original look. The hotel markets 1916, but that date belongs to the demolished hotel. Guests sleep in the 1936 Annex, which predates the 1964 earthquake.
The ghost story
The Anchorage Daily News reported in 2012 that front-desk staff keep a ghost log in which guests record flickering lights, unexplained noises and temperature changes; one entry for Room 202 describes tapping on the door and children giggling when no children were in the hotel. Staff also told the paper of a white dress reflected in a mirror.
