The story
Henry B. Wardman came to Deadwood in 1878 as a tinsmith and plumber and became a partner in a hardware business. The inn says he moved his first house to the back of the lot in 1898 and built this Queen Anne house at the front, finishing it in early 1899 as a 12-room home. His widow Catherine ran it as a boarding house during the Great Depression. It sat vacant after a foreclosure until 2010, and it has run as the 1899 Inn since 2012. Book one of the seven main-house rooms for the historic house; the inn says the two cottages are a 1920s duplex. The inn takes children 12 and older only.
