The story
To turn the Hotel Texas into a headquarters hotel for the new Tarrant County Convention Center, owners commissioned Preston Geren Jr. to modernize it and add a 13-floor annex across Commerce Street. The work, designed from 1968, was completed in 1970: the hotel reopened in May 1970 and the annex a few months later. In 2014 the National Register listing was expanded to include the annex for its role in reviving downtown in the 1960s. It now operates as Le Méridien Fort Worth Downtown.
