The story
Joseph and Christena Brandt built the two-story limestone hotel in anticipation of a boom from the Rock Island Railway, opening it with 17 rooms in December 1887. It passed in 1896 to Joseph’s brother-in-law Jacob Horne, whose family renamed it the Alma Hotel. The Bute family owned it from 1962 to 1989, when it was known for a French restaurant. It later closed and stood empty for decades. A new ownership group bought it in November 2023, renovated it through 2024 and reopened it as a six-room boutique hotel in February 2025.
