The story

Galveston businessmen financed the $1,000,000 hotel to revive the island’s economy after the 1900 hurricane, and it was completed in 1911 to designs by St. Louis firm Mauran and Russell, with a red tile roof and white stuccoed walls. Hotel and city are named for Bernardo de Gálvez, Spanish governor of Louisiana and viceroy of Mexico. The hotel’s timeline says it opened June 10, 1911 as the first fireproof hotel, and the Baker Corporation later bought it for $1 million and modernized it.

The ghost story

Travel Texas reports the hotel is said to be haunted by the 'Lovelorn Lady', a bride whose life was cut short after her fiancé died. It is told as local lore.
