The story
William Lock Chew built a three-room brick house here between 1809 and 1820. Gerard Brandon III, son of an early Mississippi governor, and Charlotte Hoggatt Brandon inherited the property in 1853 and raised the new house over the old one, finishing Brandon Hall in 1856. It was a working cotton plantation of some 2,200 acres by the 1870s. The Hoggatt and Brandon families held it for 81 years, until a 1914 default sale. The sources read do not address enslaved people at Brandon Hall.
