The story
Marmaduke Dyson built the hotel in 1925 on Fairhope Avenue, in the single-tax colony that Iowa reformers founded in 1894. The 1988 nomination notes it was advertised in 1932 as ‘new, modern, fireproof and comfortable,’ and by 1988 it was the Square Rigger Restaurant. The restored building keeps its original heart-pine floors and transom windows. Bay Business News reported it as the first Fairhope restoration to use both federal and Alabama historic tax credits.
