The story

James Battle and his brothers opened the first Battle House in 1852, a hotel designed by Isaiah Rogers on a site where earlier inns had burned. It burned in 1905, and a company of Mobile citizens raised about $1.35 million to rebuild it by 1908 as one of the earliest steel-framed buildings in the state. Woodrow Wilson was entertained here in 1913 after his Southern Commercial Congress speech. Sheraton bought the hotel in 1958, and it closed in 1974 and stood empty for three decades. The Retirement Systems of Alabama restored it alongside the RSA Battle House Tower, and it reopened in 2007.

The ghost story

Visit Mobile reports that guests and staff have seen faucets and lights turning on and off by themselves. The hotel's 'whispering arch' is an acoustic feature, not ghost lore.
