The story
Sheep rancher Jacob Halverson financed the $20,000 hotel in 1890, as the Northern Pacific’s 1883 depot turned Big Timber into a shipping center. It was one of the masonry buildings that replaced frame and sod-roofed structures along McLeod Street. Restored in the 1990s, it helped turn the commercial district around. It has a restaurant and a restored 1890 saloon.
The ghost story
Yellowstone Country's tourism office says the hotel is rumored to have footsteps from empty rooms, whispering voices and mysterious puddles.
