The story
Under NPS pressure to serve budget auto travelers, the Glacier Park Hotel Company began the Swiftcurrent Auto Camp in 1933 with 27 spartan frame cabins, a camp store and a public shower. Added circles brought it to 54 guest cabins in six tepee-style rings by 1936. The Heaven’s Peak forest fire of August 1936 destroyed most of the buildings in the valley, and 31 burned cabins were rebuilt in 1937 from the original plans. The valley’s new water system and road rehabilitation closed the area in 2025.
