The story

The inn says the building dates to 1856 and served first as a stagecoach stop and later as one of the communal kitchens of the Amana Colonies. The Amana Society bought the whole village of Homestead in 1861 to gain the railroad connection there. The colonists lived communally until 1932, and the seven villages were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965.
