The story
Thomas Blish, designer of Galena’s Old Market House, began the house in 1845 and finished it about 1848. Its owners included wholesale grocer George W. Campbell, banker Nathan Corwith from 1861, and Union Army Major George S. Avery and his wife Elizabeth from 1881 until his death in 1923. In 1903 the west end was remodeled, adding the oak staircase and raising the dormers.
