The story
The site at Main and West Second held Antoine LeClaire’s LeClaire House, built in 1839 and remembered as Davenport’s first hotel. Attorney W.C. Putnam planned a modern office building to replace it but died in 1906; his brother Edward K. Putnam completed the Putnam Building in 1910 to a D.H. Burnham and Company design. It was Davenport’s first steel-frame ‘tall’ office building and held 105 offices, its rents benefiting the Putnam Memorial Fund behind today’s Putnam Museum. A renovation completed in July 2017 turned it into The Current Iowa.
