The story

George A. and Viola Burden established the country estate on the Mississippi bluffs in 1908 and lived in what became the chauffeur’s house while the Grey House was finished. Architect Lawrence Buck designed the stucco-walled, shake-roofed Grey House, and its Arts & Crafts light fixtures may be by metalworker Eleanor d’Arcy Gaw. The White House followed in 1924 for their son Bill Burden. Four prehistoric burial mounds line the bluff below the house, and revenue from the inn funds the foundation’s HEART job-training program.
