The story

Charles T. Hancock, who succeeded his father as head of the wholesale grocer John T. Hancock & Sons, built the house on the bluff at Grove Terrace. The nomination calls it one of Dubuque’s finest Queen Anne houses, notable for its prominent setting and massive scale, and credits architect Frank D. Hyde. Hancock was elected chairman of the Iowa Republican Central Committee in 1898. Owners after 1913 made no major alterations, and the inn displays antiques that belonged to Hancock.
