The story
Cal Carrington, a cowboy with a hazy past, homesteaded the remote site and ran it as a small dude ranch before selling it in 1923 to his friend Cissy Patterson, the Washington socialite and later publisher of the Washington Times-Herald. Patterson built the present lodge, seven cabins and a barn in 1922-23 as a mountain retreat. The ranch documents Jackson Hole’s shift from cattle ranching to tourism and was listed on the National Register in 2001. It now hosts small groups in five guest cabins.
