The story
Earl F. Crouch obtained a Shoshone National Forest permit for the site in August 1917 and ran it as Gunbarrel Lodge until 1925, when it was sold and renamed Absaroka Mountain Lodge. According to the lodge it was once owned by Buffalo Bill Cody’s grandson, Fred Garlow. About 60 percent of the surviving buildings date from 1917 and the 1920s, and the 2003 listing counts the log guest cabins as contributing.
