The story
The hotel opened in 1891 and is the oldest operating hotel in Yellowstone. Concessioner architect Robert Reamer transformed it in 1903-04 with Ionic porticoes and Colonial Revival detailing, and later work added a new East Wing (1922-23) and the Solarium and West Wing (1928). After decades as an ‘anachronism’, it was restored between 1984 and 1990 under the National Park Service and the concessioner. It was listed on the National Register in 1991.
The ghost story
Some park staff tell of a lead porter in early-1900s clothing who still works the hotel in spirit form, offering to help guests get their luggage to the second floor and suggesting trails to explore, according to the concessioner's 2024 ghost-stories post.
