The story
In 1954 Henry J. Kaiser and developer Fritz B. Burns bought the Kalia estate of John Ena Jr., including the Niumalu Hotel, and opened the Hawaiian Village Hotel in 1955 with thatched-roof cottages, the Tapa Room and three pools. The Ocean Tower and a Buckminster Fuller–licensed geodesic dome, built in 22 hours, followed in 1957. Conrad Hilton bought half of the resort in 1961 and renamed it the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The Rainbow Tower opened in 1968 with a rainbow mosaic 26 feet wide and 286 feet tall, made of more than 16,000 tiles.
