The story

The Allerton House Company, a national chain of ‘club hotels’ offering young professionals hotel service with the sociability of a private club, built the 25-story Allerton in 1922-1924. The city calls it a rare Chicago example of North Italian Renaissance design, with decorative brickwork and a picturesque roofline. It was the city’s first high-rise built with pronounced setbacks and towers, which the new zoning laws encouraged, and it helped turn North Michigan Avenue into a fashionable boulevard.
