The story
Brothers Emil and Karl Eitel bought the four-story Germania Hotel at Randolph and Wells in 1894-1895 and renamed it the Bismarck. After a full demolition in 1924, the present building opened in 1926 and anchored the Eitels’ ‘Eitel Block’; Sonesta says the rebuilt hotel had 600 guest rooms. Through the 1930s and 1940s it hosted stage and screen stars. It now operates as The Allegro Royal Sonesta, which marked the building’s 100 years in 2026.
