The story

The eight-story brick Hotel Elkhart opened in 1923 near the railroad depot, and its success led to a nine-story east addition five years later; at its height it had 225 rooms, the Redwood Room supper club and the Athenian Ballroom. Guests reportedly included Ed Sullivan and Robert Kennedy. It closed as a hotel in the early 1970s and became Greencroft Tower senior housing, then offices and apartments. Cressy Commercial Real Estate and Mno-Bmadsen, the investment arm of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, restored it for a reported $23 million and reopened it in 2021 with 93 rooms in Hilton’s Tapestry Collection.
