The story
The state acquired the Pokagon land in 1925, and the Potawatomi Inn opened in 1927 above the southern basin of Lake James, named for the Potawatomi people who once lived there. Its two-story stucco original section with a red tile roof survives intact at the west end of the much-enlarged inn, with additions in 1931, 1967 and up to 1995. Civilian Conservation Corps crews camped at the park from 1934 to 1942 built nearly all its other major buildings. The inn and four CCC overnight cabins are contributing buildings in the park’s historic district.
