The story
State Penal Farm laborers built the brick inn, and made most of its furniture, finishing it in July 1919 with electric lights and running water. Indianapolis architects Bishop, Knowlton and Carson designed it, and the firm went on to design state park inns at Brown County, Clifty Falls and Pokagon. Wings were added in 1930, 1940 and around 1970 and the rooms were remodeled in 1973, but the front still keeps the look patrons have known for nearly a century. The Civilian Conservation Corps built five double cabins near the inn in 1941, and the inn and those cabins are contributing buildings in the park’s 2019 National Register listing.
