The story
Elizabeth Gates, widow of a wholesale grocery merchant, built the Free Classic–style house in 1905 in the Old Northside, then home to many of the city’s leading families, and lived there until 1907. The Life family bought, renovated and redecorated it and opened it as a bed and breakfast in February 1999. It has five guest rooms and a third-floor suite, and is run alongside the nearby Stone Soup Inn.
