The story
To separate trains from street traffic, the Union Railway Company laid footings for an elevated train shed in 1916; the concourse under the tracks and the seven-acre shed above were completed in 1922 behind the 1888 Romanesque Revival station. Passenger traffic peaked near 200 trains a day around then and had almost ceased by 1970. The 273-room Crowne Plaza later took over much of the western portion of the train shed, with 26 rooms built into 13 Pullman cars left on the original tracks, and it leases the station’s Grand Hall for events.
