The story
The Utah Parks Company, a Union Pacific subsidiary, hired Gilbert Stanley Underwood to design a rustic lodge complex in Zion Canyon; the lodge opened in May 1925, followed by stand-alone cabins. The ten duplex ‘Western’ cabins of 1927 and five four-unit cabins of 1929 each have a stone fireplace and porch and remain on their original sites. Fire destroyed the main lodge on January 26, 1966; the Park Service rebuilt a simpler version on the old foundation in 108 days, and a 1990s renovation restored a 1920s look. Zion Lodge is the only lodging inside the park.
