The story
The hotel was built in 1926 at the corner of Second and Market streets in downtown Lewes and appears as the Caesar Rodney Hotel in a 1928 photograph held by the Delaware Public Archives. Over the decades it also traded as the New Devon Inn, the Zwaanendael Inn and the Swans’ Inn; the 1976 National Register nomination for the Lewes Historic District lists it as the ‘Valley of the Swans Hotel’ on the site of Caleb Rodney’s store. The building was restored in 1989 and has 20 rooms and four suites on two floors, above the Rose & Crown restaurant and street-level shops.
