The story

George W. Hellmuth designed the seven-story International Fur Exchange, begun in 1919 and opened in 1920, and St. Louis was an international center of the fur trade from 1920 to 1948. The Fouke Fur Company held federal auctions of fur seal pelts from the Pribilof Islands here. A compatible ten-story addition was built in 1958. Drury Hotels bought the building in 1997 and joined it with the Thomas Jefferson and American Zinc buildings to create the Drury Plaza Hotel at the Arch.
