The story
Local entrepreneur Philip Gevurtz built the 700-room, block-long Multnomah Hotel, which opened on February 8, 1912. Western Hotels (later Westin) ran it from 1931 until it closed in 1963, and the building then housed government offices from 1965 to 1992. It was sold in 1995, restored with its rooms reduced to 276 suites, and reopened in 1997 as an Embassy Suites. Reported guests include Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, Elvis Presley and every president from Theodore Roosevelt to Richard Nixon.
