The story
George Heathman built the New Heathman as a sister to his first hotel a block away; it was Portland’s largest construction project to that date and opened on December 17, 1927. The ten-story building was designed in the Jacobean Revival style by the Portland firm DeYoung & Roald. Radio station KOIN broadcast from the mezzanine from the 1930s to the 1950s, and the hotel was restored in 1984, when its entrance moved to Broadway.
The ghost story
Lore centers on Room 703: a 1999 KOIN-TV report carried by CBS News said glasses and a chair moved on their own and lights went out there, and a longtime employee tied it to a 1975 death in Room 303, directly below. Later accounts, such as 1859 Oregon Magazine's, add rooms 803 and 1003.
