The story
Walla Walla citizens, organized by banker W. W. Baker in 1927, bought stock to finance a first-class hotel, and the Marcus Whitman was completed in 1928; the nomination calls its community-driven financing outstanding. Seattle architect Sherwood D. Ford designed it and described its style as ‘perpendicular modern’. Listed on the National Register in 1999, it is a Historic Hotels of America member with a restaurant and in-house wine tasting rooms.
