The story
John S. McMillin built the Roche Harbor Lime & Cement Company into the largest lime works on the West Coast and expanded an old Hudson’s Bay Company building into the Hotel de Haro, dated by the resort to 1886. President Theodore Roosevelt stayed there, as the guest register still shows. After the lime works closed, the Tarte family reopened the hotel in 1960, and it remains the centerpiece of the Roche Harbor resort village.
